We turned to my car and started walking again. Since Mathias lived on the way to the zoo, I had picked him up. Unfortunately, as we reached my Volvo, my phone rang. I pulled it out of my purse, glanced at the screen, and sighed.
āDamn,ā I said.
āSomething wrong?ā
I looked at my date and slid my finger across the screen to answer.
āItās my dispatcher,ā I said before putting the phone to my ear. āThis is Joe Court. What do you need?ā
āHey, Joe. Iām sorry for calling. Trisha told me you were off tonight, but weāve got a situation unfolding in St. Augustine. We have multiple shots fired in Sycamore Park and have at least one victim down. The suspect fled on foot, and we have officers in pursuit now. We need a detective.ā
The caller was Jason Zuckerburg, our evening dispatcher. I processed what heād said and then nodded.
āDo we have anybody at the scene?ā
āMarcus Washington. He called for paramedics and a detective.ā
I sighed. The paramedics were a formality. Marcus wouldnāt have called for a detective this early unless the victim was dead.
āTell Marcus to secure the scene. Iām in St. Louis, but Iāll be there as soon as I can. Iāll work the case, but Iām leaving town tomorrow for an assignment in Terre Haute.ā
Zuckerburg told me to drive safely. I thanked him and hung up and then looked to Mathias. He gave me a knowing but sympathetic look.
āI guess weāll have dinner next time.ā I nodded.
āSorry, but you know how it is,ā I said, reaching for both of his hands. I pulled him close and kissed him. He put his hands around my back and gave me a hug. It felt nice. Once he let go, I stepped back but continued to hold his hands. āYou mind getting a cab to take you home?ā
āSure,ā he said. āStay safe.ā
āI will,ā I said. I kissed him once more before climbing into my car. He waved as I put my car in gear. I turned around on Wells Drive and felt a bundle of nerves in my gut untangle. My last real relationship had been in college, almost eight years ago, and it hadnāt ended well because Iād pushed the guy away at every opportunity when things had become serious. I hoped I wouldnāt screw this one up. My past was...complicated. Mathias understood as much as he could, but we had led very different lives. I hoped heād be patient.
For now, though, I couldnāt worry about my love life. I had a murder to work. This would be a long night.

WHATāS THE JOE COURT SERIES ABOUT?
Joe Court is a young detective in fictional tourist town and county of St Augustine, Missouri. The streets are well-swept, the surroundings are gorgeous, and the people are friendlyāexcept for the murderers, of course.
Beneath its beautiful exterior, St. Augustine is a county built on poison and lies. Its murder rate is astronomical, its government is corrupt, and drug use is out of control.
Joeās there to clean the place up. Itās not going to be easy, but sheās exactly the right person or the job.
The books are gripping, gritty murder mysteries. In each book, Joe Court investigates a crimeāusually a murder, but not alwaysāand takes that crime to a thrilling conclusion. I donāt like cliffhangers. The main story is resolved in each book. Youāre going to find out what happened to the bad guys in each story. That said, there are side stories that continue from one book to another. A rumor in one book might turn out to be a far bigger deal than anyone anticipated in later books. Because of that, itās best to read the story in order.Ā
