They made their choice years ago. They buried the truth⊠amongst other things. But evil only begets evil. The monster they created is here, and heâs on the huntâŠ
Detective Mary Joe Courtâs home is her sanctuary. Itâs the one place she can let her guard down and be herself. And her home has one rule: No murder allowed. That means no pictures from murder scenes, no interview notes, no files, no death in her home. For years, that rule has worked out well.
But now death is knocking on her door.
A serial killer the local news has dubbed the Apostate has already taken twelve young people. To stop him, Joe must dig deep into her townâs sordid and forgotten past. But even that might not be enough. Because the Apostate intends to uncover the truth and bury everyone who hurt him.
And Joe stands right in his way.
The Boys in the Church is the third thrilling novel in New York Timesâ bestselling author Chris Culverâs Joe Court series. If you like James Patterson, David Baldacci, or Karin Slaughter, youâll love this series.

đ„Heâs killed before. Heâs going to kill again...unless Joe can stop him.đ„
âThe girl was named Paige Maxwell. She was a senior in high school, and she was seventeen. Her boyfriend, the missing young man, attended the same high school and had recently turned eighteen. Paigeâs parents contacted us on March 14. Jude Lewisâs parents called us the next day. I talked to all four of them and then typed up my interview notes afterwards. They should be available on our departmentâs server.â
One of the FBI agents looked up from a notepad and leaned forward. He had black hair cut close to his scalp line and acne scars that pockmarked his cheeks. His brown eyes were small for his angular face, while his pointed chin was large for his frame. He kind of looked like a cartoon version of Dracula.
âYou said Paige was seventeen and Jude was eighteen. Why are we using the past tense? Are we sure theyâre dead?â
My eyes flicked to Agent Lawson before focusing on Dracula once more.
âWeâre not positive, but I canât imagine theyâre still alive. They disappeared six weeks ago, and neither has contacted his or her family or friends, neither has used credit cards or tried to access their bank accounts, and neither has shown up yet. We also found Paigeâs car in the woods. The backseat had hair, sweat, saliva, and seminal fluidsâthe kind of stuff youâd expect in a teenagerâs carâbut someone had cleaned the front seats. You donât clean and dump a car that deep in the woods without a reason.â
Agent Lawson nodded, but his eyes looked distant.
âWhereâs this car now?â he asked.
âThe State Highway Patrol has it,â I said. âWeâre a small station. Theyâve got access to resources we donât, so we handed it over to them.â
Dracula looked at Lawson. âFor the time being, Iâd suggest we assume Paige and Jude are still alive. Until we discover this guyâs pattern, we canât assume heâs killed them already.â
Lawson nodded and looked at me. âAgreed. Go ahead, Detective. After you learned Paige and Jude were missing, what did you do?â
I wanted to tell Dracula I didnât simply assume Paige and Jude were dead, but this wasnât an interrogation or a critique. They were there to gather information. We were partners in this case.
At least thatâs what I told myself.
đFROM: The Boys in the Church, the third book in the Joe Court series. đ
WHATâS THE JOE COURT SERIES ABOUT?
Joe Court is a young detective in fictional tourist town and county of St Augustine, Missouri. The streets are well-swept, the surroundings are gorgeous, and the people are friendlyâexcept for the murderers, of course.Â
âšBeneath its beautiful exterior, St. Augustine is a county built on poison and lies. Its murder rate is astronomical, its government is corrupt, and drug use is out of control.âšJoeâs there to clean the place up. Itâs not going to be easy, but sheâs exactly the right person or the job.Â
âš
The books are gripping, gritty murder mysteries. In each book, Joe Court investigates a crimeâusually a murder, but not alwaysâand takes that crime to a thrilling conclusion. I donât like cliffhangers. The main story is resolved in each book. Youâre going to find out what happened to the bad guys in each story. That said, there are side stories that continue from one book to another. A rumor in one book might turn out to be a far bigger deal than anyone anticipated in later books. Because of that, itâs best to read the story in order.
