Detective Mary Joe Court sleeps with a shotgun beside her bed and a loveable bullmastiff at her feet. For the past twelve years, sheâs hidden from a nightmarish past, but with every passing day, her scars fade, and her heart grows lighter. Now, for the first time in her life, she looks forward to her future. Sheâs happy.
Then she finds the body.
Someone shot the victim in her chest and left her to die in a cheap motel. Joe knew her well. She grew up with her. They were sisters, of a sort.
Twelve years ago, the victim put a gangster in prison. Now that gangsterâs out, and heâs looking to settle scoresâJoe included.
Joe has fought to leave her past behind. Now, she has to face it or lose everything she cares about. Because the killer hunting her will tear apart her carefully constructed life piece by piece until thereâs nothing left.
Unless Joe gets him first.
The Girl in the Motel is the first thrilling novel in New York Timesâ bestselling author Chris Culverâs Joe Court series. If you like Michael Connelly, John Sandford, or James Patterson, youâll love this series.

đ„Come see Beautiful St. Augustine! Survival not guaranteed!đ„
As I waited for my coffee, my phone buzzed. Even in bucolic St. Augustine, early-morning phone calls never boded well. I sighed before answering.
âItâs Joe. Yeah?â
âMorning, Joe. Hear you got into a fist fight last night. You doing okay?â
The voice belonged to Sheriff Travis Kosen. I had met him twelve years ago when he had been a detective in St. Louis. He gave me my first job years later after I finished college.
âIâm fine, and it wasnât a fist fight. A drunk guy took a swing at me, missed, and fell down. I put cuffs on him before he could stand up again.â
âSo you won.â
My lips curled into a tight smile. âIf thatâs your definition of winning, I guess I did. Iâm on my way in. What do you need?â
The boss grunted. âWeâve got a murder at the Wayfair Motel.â
I rubbed sleep out of my eyes and groaned.
âI havenât even had my coffee yet. Itâs too early for a body.â
Two or three tourists looked at me askance, but I ignored them.Â
âDeath pays little mind to our creature comforts,â said Travis. âYouâve got a job to do.â
đFROM: The Girl in the Motel, the first book in the Joe Court series. đ
WHATâS THE JOE COURT SERIES ABOUT?
Joe Court is a young detective in fictional tourist town and county of St Augustine, Missouri. The streets are well-swept, the surroundings are gorgeous, and the people are friendlyâexcept for the murderers, of course.Â
Beneath its beautiful exterior, St. Augustine is a county built on poison and lies. Its murder rate is astronomical, its government is corrupt, and drug use is out of control.
Joeâs there to clean the place up. Itâs not going to be easy, but sheâs exactly the right person or the job.Â
The books are gripping, gritty murder mysteries. In each book, Joe Court investigates a crimeâusually a murder, but not alwaysâand takes that crime to a thrilling conclusion. I donât like cliffhangers. The main story is resolved in each book. Youâre going to find out what happened to the bad guys in each story. That said, there are side stories that continue from one book to another. A rumor in one book might turn out to be a far bigger deal than anyone anticipated in later books. Because of that, itâs best to read the story in order.Â
