In the latest novel in the Joe Court series, Missouriâs most dogged detective is forced to juggle small-town politics while solving a fresh murder with ties to a long forgotten case.
The St. Augustine County Sheriffâs Department is in crisis. Detective Joe Court doesnât know whether sheâll have a job tomorrow, and she has no idea who her boss will be. She doesnât even know whoâs going to pay for the gas in her cruiser. None of that matters, though. She has a job to do.
The call comes in the middle of the afternoon. A young man walks into the public safety office at his college with blood on his shirt and a gun in his pocket. He says he shot a woman and left her to die, but he wonât say why.
The victim is beloved by those who know her. She spent a lifetime helping families in need. Her shooter had no reason to want her dead, and yet, dead she is.
She wonât be the last, either.
As Joe investigates, she uncovers ties to a murder eight years ago, but every clue and connection she discovers leaves her more baffled than before. Nothing makes sense.
Which was the point.
The case is a trap.
And Joe just sprung it.
The Girl in the Tent is the eleventh novel in the thrilling Joe Court series. She faces one of the most dangerous foes sheâs encountered, and sheâs doing it alone. Pre-order the book today and clear your schedule. Youâll want some free time.
đ„One dead woman. One college student. One bad day.đ„
âOkay,â I said. âWhat have you got?â
âA young man came in about twenty minutes ago. He had blood on his shirt,â said Rusty. âHe was armed, but he gave up his firearm.â
I straightened and drew in a breath.
âOkay,â I said, nodding. âIs he a student?â
âHe is,â said Austin. âJust starting his senior year. Never been in trouble here. Clean record, no outstanding warrants. Name is Wyatt Caparaso. Heâs twenty-two and lives off campus with a couple of other students. Weâve already checked them out, and theyâre fine. Iâve got Wyattâs shirt bagged in an evidence bag. It had a considerable amount of blood spatter on it. I gave him a sweatshirt to cover himself up. He walked through the door and said he needed help. I made sure he wasnât bleeding and then called you.â
I swore to myself and grabbed a notepad from my purse to jot down some notes. Then I glanced up.
âYou have him in custody?â
Austin looked at Peterson.
âHeâs in my office,â said Peterson. I followed him toward a small private office behind the front desk. There, I found a young man sitting in a chair in front of Rustyâs desk. He had black hair. His pale skin had an almost greenish hue. I suspected it was olive-colored most of the time. Now, he looked sick. Peterson and I stayed near the doorway. The kid turned around. His eyes were glassy and streaked with red.
âYouâre Mr. Caparaso?â I asked. He nodded. âYou doing okay? You look like youâre going to vomit.â
âI killed a lady. I didnât even know her.â
Skin all over my body tingled, and I nodded.
âOkay,â I said. âYou sit tight. Mr. Peterson here is going to stay with you. Keep your hands on the arms of your chair so we know youâre not trying to hurt anybody or yourself.â
Caparaso didnât react, so I leaned into Peterson and lowered my voice.
âHeâs in shock. If he moves, cuff his arms to the chair.â
Peterson nodded, and I stepped past him and into the lobby again, already taking out my cell phone. Austin perked up when he saw me. I gave him a tight smile and called Lieutenant Cognata.
âHey,â I said, âThis is Joe Court in St. Augustine again. I need a detective for a homicide investigation.â

WHATâS THE JOE COURT SERIES ABOUT?
âšJoe Court is a young detective in fictional tourist town and county of St Augustine, Missouri. The streets are well-swept, the surroundings are gorgeous, and the people are friendlyâexcept for the murderers, of course.Â
âšBeneath its beautiful exterior, St. Augustine is a county built on poison and lies. Its murder rate is astronomical, its government is corrupt, and drug use is out of control.âšJoeâs there to clean the place up. Itâs not going to be easy, but sheâs exactly the right person or the job.
The books are gripping, gritty murder mysteries. In each book, Joe Court investigates a crimeâusually a murder, but not alwaysâand takes that crime to a thrilling conclusion. I donât like cliffhangers. The main story is resolved in each book. Youâre going to find out what happened to the bad guys in each story. That said, there are side stories that continue from one book to another. A rumor in one book might turn out to be a far bigger deal than anyone anticipated in later books. Because of that, itâs best to read the story in order.
