I spent the next half hour on the phone before a ranger at Castlewood State Park took me seriously and told me what he’d do in my situation. I thanked him and walked back to the cave. The spelunkers were quiet, so I knelt beside the hole.

Before I could tell them the plan, Jackson started speaking.

“Deborah and I have been talking.”

“Whispering like rats, you mean,” said Tony, quickly. “If you were talking, I’d be included.”

They started yelling at each other about whether Tony would be included in the proceeds of any treasure buried inside the cave. I gritted my teeth and counted to ten before yelling.

“If you guys don’t shut up, I’m leaving.”

They went quiet. I gave them a moment and then started to speak, but Deborah cut me off.

“Dynamite,” she said. “It’ll clear the entrance.”

I rubbed my eyes.

I don’t like cliffhangers. The main story is resolved in each book. You’re going to find out what happened to the bad guys in each story. That said, there are side stories that continue from one book to another. A rumor in one book might turn out to be a far bigger deal than anyone anticipated in later books. Because of that, it’s best to read the story in order.
