Nearly a year ago, Detective Mary Joe Court left St. Augustine County to find herself. Now sheâs back home and back on the job to fight for the things she believes in.
Unfortunately, thereâs no rest for the weary. There are bodies on the ground at a local farm.
It looks like a family fight that got out of hand. But itâs not. The familyâs teenage babysitter is gone. So is their youngest daughter.
The girls were taken. But why would anyone abduct a little girl and her babysitter?
Joe knows thereâs more to this case than she realizes, and to get the girls back alive, sheâll have to utilize every ounce of ability she has. Even then, that might not be enough. Because the people sheâs hunting are dangerousâŠand closer than she could ever realize.
THE MEN ON THE FARM is the eighth thrilling novel in New York Timesâ bestselling author Chris Culverâs Joe Court series. This is a great series. Check it out from the beginning!
đ„Joe races against time to save two innocent victims.đ„
âMorning,â I said. âIâm Detective Joe Court with the St. Augustine County Sheriffâs Department, and Iâm here to speak with Makayla Simpson.â
The receptionist, a woman in her early twenties, smiled and typed at her computer before looking up at me.
âThe other detective is here already,â she said. She paused and narrowed her eyes. âHe was a little gruff.â
âHeâs a butthead,â I said. âDo you know where he is, by chance?â
âHe went to Ms. Simpsonâs room on the fourth floor, but Iâm not sure if heâs still there. I can page him if youâd like.â
I thanked her but said no and then took an elevator to Makaylaâs floor. George sat on an upholstered green chair in the lobby outside the elevator. He was in his fifties and had dark hair and an angular, pockmarked face. When he saw me, he sighed and started clapping lightly.
âGlad you could finally make it,â he said. âIâve been here for half an hour waiting for you.â
I forced a smile to my lips and then reached behind me to pull my hair from my face and into a ponytail.
âI didnât have a job half an hour ago, so you only have yourself to blame for your wasted time,â I said. âWhat have you done so far?â
He closed his eyes and started to open his mouth but then seemed to think better of it.
âAs your partner,â he said, after a pause, âI thought itâd be best to wait for you before doing anything. Ms. Simpson is in room 411 at the end of the hall, but I havenât gone in to see her.â
âHowâs her condition?â
âI donât know,â said Delgado. âHer doctor was supposed to brief me, but heâs been with other patients all morning.â
âLetâs find a nurse, then,â I said, walking past him to the nursesâ desk nearest Makaylaâs room
đFROM: The Men on the Farm, the eighth book in the Joe Court series. đ
WHATâS THE JOE COURT SERIES ABOUT?
âšJoe Court is a young detective in fictional tourist town and county of St Augustine, Missouri. The streets are well-swept, the surroundings are gorgeous, and the people are friendlyâexcept for the murderers, of course.
Beneath its beautiful exterior, St. Augustine is a county built on poison and lies. Its murder rate is astronomical, its government is corrupt, and drug use is out of control.âšJoeâs there to clean the place up. Itâs not going to be easy, but sheâs exactly the right person or the job.Â
âšThe books are gripping, gritty murder mysteries. In each book, Joe Court investigates a crimeâusually a murder, but not alwaysâand takes that crime to a thrilling conclusion. I donât like cliffhangers. The main story is resolved in each book. Youâre going to find out what happened to the bad guys in each story. That said, there are side stories that continue from one book to another. A rumor in one book might turn out to be a far bigger deal than anyone anticipated in later books. Because of that, itâs best to read the story in order.
