Detective Mary Joe Court returns in a gripping story of murder, madness, and revenge in the ninth novel of New York Times' bestselling author Chris Culver's Joe Court series.
Joe was driving home when her dispatcher called. An arsonist had doused a local home with gasoline and lit it on fire. The homeowner escaped without injury, and the damage is minimal. It's a crime, but it's not a tragedy.
Only the arsonist isn't done.
He has ambitions and grievances, and he doesn't care about houses. That was practice. His actual targets walk on two legs.
Joe dives into the case and finds herself confronted by an adversary barely clinging to reality, a man the media have dubbed the Flamethrower. Despite her years as a detective and experience investigating the most heinous crimes imaginable, Joe can't wrap her head around this one. The Flamethrower's actions make no sense. His attacks seem random.
That's his secret. The flamethrower may be insane, but he's supremely rational. He has a goal, and he won't stop until he burns the world to ash...unless Joe gets him first.
The Man in the River is a riveting thriller with great twists. If you like Michael Connelly, James Patterson, or Lisa Gardner, you'll love Chris Culver's Joe Court series. Check it out!
đ„Wow. Thatâs a bad day.đ„
I smiled and looked toward the home. Someone had stacked firewood at the base of the home and lit it ablaze. The fire, then, had climbed up the side of the house, melting the vinyl but not catching the homeâs internals on fire. Itâd take a contractor a weekend to fix the damage, but the home looked livable.
âSo what have we got?â
âAttempted arson,â he said, putting on some blue gloves and kneeling next to the home to sift through the debris on the ground. I knelt beside him and caught a whiff of gasoline. âIt looks like our arsonist stacked firewood against the house like a teepee, then poured gasoline over the top of it. He might have put some firewood on the ground, too, but I donât know. He then poured gas on the grass around the wood to create a trail. Then he lit it up.
âFortunately, gasoline burns so quickly it didnât have time to heat the homeâs construction timbers to their ignition point. We hosed it down, but it mostly fizzled out on its own.â
I stepped back and snapped pictures with my cell phone.
âAnd you think the accelerant was gasoline?â
âYep,â he said. âWeâll run some tests, but you can still smell it.â
âDid you find a gas can?â
âYep,â he repeated. âIn the garage. It was empty, but it still had fumes inside. Your officer has it near his car.â
âWeâll dust it for prints and see what we can find,â I said. âIs the homeowner inside?â
âLast I checked,â said Cluney. âHis name is Jason Kaufman, and heâs cantankerous. Maybe heâll be nicer to you than he was to me, though.â
I looked toward the house.
âOkay. Iâll talk to him and forward my findings to your office.â
âAnd Iâll do the same, Detective,â he said. âGood luck.â
I thanked him and walked toward the front of the home. The roof overhung the patio in front, providing shade on sunny afternoons and protection from the rain on rainy days. Today, it just made the area gloomy. I knocked on the door and waved over Dave Skelton. He joined me on the porch just as Mr. Kaufman opened the door. He was in his late twenties to early thirties and had an earring and enormous sideburns. If I had to guess, Iâd say he spent a lot of time in a tanning booth. The moment he saw me, his eyes flicked down to my chest.
âHey,â I said. âThanks for coming out. My eyes are just below my forehead, by the way.â

WHATâS THE JOE COURT SERIES ABOUT?
Joe Court is a young detective in fictional tourist town and county of St Augustine, Missouri. The streets are well-swept, the surroundings are gorgeous, and the people are friendlyâexcept for the murderers, of course.
Beneath its beautiful exterior, St. Augustine is a county built on poison and lies. Its murder rate is astronomical, its government is corrupt, and drug use is out of control.âšJoeâs there to clean the place up. Itâs not going to be easy, but sheâs exactly the right person or the job.
The books are gripping, gritty murder mysteries. In each book, Joe Court investigates a crimeâusually a murder, but not alwaysâand takes that crime to a thrilling conclusion. I donât like cliffhangers. The main story is resolved in each book. Youâre going to find out what happened to the bad guys in each story. That said, there are side stories that continue from one book to another. A rumor in one book might turn out to be a far bigger deal than anyone anticipated in later books. Because of that, itâs best to read the story in order.
